INDIA SETS FIRST FOOT IN THE OSCARS' ANIMATED SHORT FILMS' CATEGORY WITH "SCHIRKOA"

Amidst all the mediocrity that has taken hold of the art of film -making in our country, a BITS Pilani dropout has created history in India's scenario of short films. Ishan Shukla's animated short Schirkoa has become India's first ever animated short film to qualify for the prestigious Oscar Awards.

Although Schirkoa did not make it to the final 10 shortlisted films, it did manage to garner worldwide critical acclaim. After being screened in 30 film festivals, and winning 13 top honours in the same, it also became the first Indian animated short film to win the Best of Show at SIGGRAPH Asia Macao. Moreover, the film also has the title of Best Animated Short Film at the Sydney World Film Festival under its award- studded belt.

As for the creator of Schirkoa, here's what Ishan Shukla writes on his website regarding his wonderful short film : “It was the record-breaking year in this category and being my first film, I am happy that it made it this far. I also got to know it is the first ever Indian animated short to ever make it to the Oscar long list in the history of Academy Awards."

The film itself has a promising concept to narrate. It goes on for about 14 minutes, telling a politician's dark tale in a dystopian city inhabited by "bag- heads"- people wearing bags over their heads. The film was made over a span of four years on Ishan's personal computer. It might possibly come out for public viewing on Vimeo, an online video platform.

For now, here's the captivating trailer of Schirkoa:
