Diego Maradona Recollects His Time As A Drug- Addict

Looking back on his long- term struggles with drugs during his time at Barcelona, Diego Maradona now wishes he had never taken them.

Claiming it to be the worst decision he has ever made, the Argentine football legend has now opened up on his problems with drug addiction, a habit he took up at Barcelona in his early 20s; something that would continue to haunt him until well after he had hung his boots.

It was only in 2004 that Maradona overcame his addiction, getting the better of it with what he claims to be was God's helping hand to him.

Speaking with Italian television network Canale 5, Maradona recalled, "I was 24 when I started taking drugs. I was at Barcelona. It was the biggest mistake I've ever made in my life."

Also recollecting the time when he was in coma, Maradona went on to say, "My daughter asked me to live for her while I was in a coma. I thank God because he listened to her and woke me up.”

On being asked if it was the money, women or drugs that blighted an otherwise wonderful (although at times controversial) career, Maradona put forward an outright honest answer:

“Drugs were the biggest problem – drugs kill," he said.

“I'm very fortunate to be here speaking to you. If I had continued I would have died. No doubt.

And at last, in a very optimistic note, he claimed, "I haven't taken drugs in 13 years now and I feel great."

SPORTS | "She was there when I had no titles": Roger Federer On Wife Mirka

After claiming his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, Roger Federer has, with much emotion, acknowledged the support and companionship he has always received from his wife Mirka.

Just a day after winning his fifth title at Melbourne Park, Federer showered appraisal on what he would like to call his 'No.1 fan'.

"She was there when I had no titles and she's still here 89 titles later," Federer said on Monday. He further added, "She had a big part to play in it – she knows it, I know it, everybody knows it.

Besides, the tennis maestro from Switzerland apparently is someone who happily puts his career aside when it comes to his marriage.

"She's a mum and wife first and only later does she become the supporter," he said. "I'm just happy she's my wife and she's my No.1 supporter."

Mirka was the first person Federer saw when he made his way off court after his incredible five-set triumph on Sunday night, following which the husband and wife shared a beautiful moment together as Federer made his way behind the scenes at Rod Laver Arena carrying the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.

Roger and Mirka have been married since 2009. They have four children together - identical twin girls, Myla and Charlene, and twin boys Leo and Lenny.

Federer also acknowledged that what made his victory all the more special was simply the time, although a brief one, he got to share with his family.

"It was an amazing half-hour (with them)," he enthused.

TECHNOLOGY | WhatsApp To Introduce Real Time Tracking Of Contacts

Instant messaging app WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow you to track your friends in real time. That means, no more "I'll be there in just 5 minutes" excuses while you're still stuck in the bathroom!

According to the WABetaInfo handle on Twitter, known for leaking information related to WhatsApp, the feature will function on beta version 2.17.3.28 for iOS and 2.16.399+ on Android.  It will be disabled by default.

Moreover, phonearena.com on Monday reported, “The tracking can be kept on for 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, or indefinitely. This comes in handy if you’re supposed to meet the gang at a certain location and time, and you want to see how far away from the destination every one in the group is.”  It also added that the live streaming is a function that can be disabled.

INDUSTRY | Vodafone In Talks With Idea For An All- Share Deal

We could soon be seeing Vodafone and Idea Cellular shake hands with each other for an all- share deal as Vodafone, on Monday revealed that it has started talks to merge its Indian operations with rivals Idea Cellular to counter the fierce competition in the market.

In a brief statement, Vodafone said that it has approached with Idea's parent, conglomerate Aditya Birla to establish the merger, which, it said, would involve Idea issuing new shares to Vodafone. They further added that this would result in Vodafone deconsolidating Vodafone India.

Beside, the merger between Idea and Vodafone could prove to be a threat for Airtel and Jio in the ongoing telecom game which began when Reliance Jio took the telecom industry with storm with its groundbreaking entry.

Currently, the subscriber count for Airtel and Jio stands at 27 crore and 7.2 crore respectively. The Vodafone- Idea merger, if it were to happen, would result in a combined subscriber count of about 39 crore, thus making it number one in the Indian telecom industry.

SCIENCE | The Newfound Secret Shortwings of The Sahyadris

Naturalists exploring the "sky islands" of The Sahyadri have stumbled upon some of its well kept secrets nestled in the forests of some of its highest peaks, confirming the founding of two new endemic genera and a new species of songbird.

The research team, comprising of V. V. Robin, Sushma Reddy, C. K. Vishnudas, Pooja Gupta, Frank E. Rheindt, Daniel M. Hooper and Uma Ramakrishnan, has published the reports of the undertaking in the latest issue of BMC Evolutionary Biology.

The reports suggest that the team has designated two new genera: one, the Western Ghats shortwings identified under Sholicola (closely related to flycatchers), and second, the laughing thrushes as Montecincla (closely related to babblers). The newly described Sholicola ashambuensis is confined to the Agasthyar Malai mountain ranges.

The species in the Montecincla genera include Montecincla jerdoni, Montecincla cachinnans, Montecincla fairbanki and Montecincla meridionalis  and belong to the genus Montecincla.

Sholicola major and Sholicola albiventris belong to Sholicola genus.

Mr. V. V. Robin, a member of the research team, stated,"Though many people had noted some differences in feather patterns across populations in different mountain tops or 'sky islands', they were still considered a single species. It wasn’t until we had genetic data that we realised the traditional story was wrong."

The taxonomy of the birds also posed a challenge to the researchers. "What used to be called Western Ghats shortwings actually turned out to be flycatchers, and what used to be called laughing thrushes are actually more closely related to other babblers," Mr. Robin added.

"When we reconstructed their genetic relationships, it was clear that these two lineages were very different from the genera in which they were previously placed," Ms. Reddy said.

Another lucky break was the discovery of old forgotten specimens in the Trivandrum Natural History Museum. “They were locked away in a cabinet and forgotten for nearly 100 years. When I found them in 2009, I never thought that it would lead to the discovery of a new species!” Mr. Vishnudas said.

"For Western Ghats, already known for its rich and unique biodiversity, we have just increased the number of bird species found nowhere else in the world and each of these now have narrower distribution," said Ms. Ramakrishnan.

The discontinuous patches of forests on the highest peaks of The Westers Ghats are home for these birds; and these happen to be some of the most vulnerable parts of the ecosystem crumbling under the increasing pressure from human activities and climate change. However, Ms. Ramakrishnan seemed hopeful of the fact that the knowledge of the distinct evolution of these birds, and of ecology would be helpful in increasing conservation efforts.

An avalanche in Bandipora’s Gurez area today has claimed the lives of nine people including five soldiers, while four other soldiers remain trapped beneath the snowslide.

According to a spokesperson, the soldiers were killed when the avalanche hit an army installation near Sonamarg, where more than five feet of snow has accumulated. Four others are missing, preliminary reports suggest.

An official revealed that the soldiers' bodies have been recovered, adding that a major rescue operation is on in the area to locate the survivors.

Besides, four civilians were killed in another avalanche in Bandipora’s Gurez area.

“Four people died in the avalanche that struck Gurez’s Budugam on Tuesday night. A rescue operation has been launched with the help of the police and the Army," sub-district magistrate Gurez Rouf-ur-Rehman said.

The bodies of Habibulah (50), Azizi (48), Gulshan Bano (19) and Irfan (17) have been recovered.

Kashmir has been witnessing heavy snowfall since Tuesday.  Warnings of avalanches in higher reaches of north and south Kashmir have already been issued by the divisional administration in the regions.

POLITICS | US President Donald Trump to Talk to PM Modi Over the Phone Today

Newly inaugurated President of the United States will speak to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone today, according to reports from the White House.

The telephonic meet is scheduled at 1 p.m. Washington DC time, which according to IST is 11:30 p.m.

With this, Mr. Modi will be the fifth foreign leader the U.S President would have spoken with over the phone after being sworn in to presidency on January 20.

Also, Mr. Modi was among the first few world leaders to have congratulated Mr. Trump on his victory in the presidential polls.

During his election campaign, Mr. Trump, in an address to Indian- Americans in Edison, New jersey, had said, "Under a Trump administration, we are going to become even better friends. In fact, I would take the term better out, and we would be best friends."

"We are going to have a phenomenal future together," he had added.

SCIENCE | A Hundred- and- three Satellites At Once: ISRO's Next Launch Mission

In 2014, Russia's Dnepr rocket- a transformed inter-continental ballistic missile- successfully launched 37 satellites into orbit in one go- a feat that to this date holds the record of launching the most satellites at once. Hopefully, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is taking long, confident strides to dethrone Russia and claim the record by launching 100 foreign and 3 native satellites in a single launch this February.

With ISRO’s trusted Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) serving as the platform for the launch, the Indian space agency looks all set to give a cutting edge to its image over its competitors, and to come out  as a reliable satellite launch service.

As for how the satellites will be launched into space,  Dr. K. Sivan, Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, had a convincing explanation to give:

The satellites will be separated from the launch vehicle in different directions. The separation angle and the time of separation will be such that no satellite will collide with the other.

Supposing that a satellite dispatched from the launch vehicle has a relative velocity of 1 metre  per second, it can be calculated that after 1,000 seconds the distance between the satellite and the rocket will be 1,000 metres. The satellite that gets launched first will move at a relatively faster velocity than the satellite that is to be launched next. This difference in relative velocities of the satellites will consequently lead to a continuous increment in the distance between the satellites, while the orbit remains unchanged.

Also, it becomes important that the team wait for the disturbances to subdue once the vehicle has reached orbital condition and before the preparation for separation begins.

As for the time, it would take 90 minutes for the vehicle to complete one orbit at an orbital altitude of about 500 kilometres. That gives the team sufficient time to launch all the 103 satellites.

Moreover, the difference of even 1 degree in the separation angle coupled with relative velocity will nullify the chances of collision between any two satellites. The satellites will be injected into orbit at different locations, at different angles, different times and with different orientations.

The launch, scheduled for February, will be a significant event for space scientists, mainly for those in the Indian space industry. If all goes well, which we truly hope it does, ISRO will ultimately garner the attention it requires for its expansion.

WOMEN'S MARCH | Photo Gallery

Saturday's Women's March saw groundbreaking participation as people from all walks of life thronged the streets across the globe (mainly across America) to promote women's rights, immigration reforms, and health care reforms, besides representing their stand against Islamophobia, rape culture, and LGBT abuse as well as addressing racial inequities, workers' issues and environmental issues.

The rallies were largely seen as protests against Donald Trump, the recently- inaugurated President of the United States, and his various statements which have been deemed as anti- women and racial.

Here are some photos from some of the rallies that constituted the Women's March, featuring some well known faces who took time to actively participate in the marches.

Bollywood actress Radhika Apte was also a participant in Saturday's Women's March.
She shared some photos of the rally on her Instagram profile.

Emily Sears dons a T- shirt reading, "Feminism is the radical notion that women are people."

A little girl holds upright a placard reading, "GRRRLS will change the world"

Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo participated in the rally in Manhattan,
highlighting some powerful opinions like these

Two women hug each other during Saturday's Women's March while holding a poster
that says, "WE THE PEOPLE ARE GREATER THAN FEAR"

The text on the board reads, "The end of patriarchy is nigh"

Cardboards and placards bearing strong words against patriarchy were a common sight
in Saturday's Women's March

Actor Mark Ruffalo displays a borrowed poster which reads, "99 PROBLEMS AND THIS BITCH IS ONE"
probably referring to the recently inaugurated president, we suppose.

Posters reading "WE THE RESILIENT HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE"
were widely circulated in the marches besides other similar ones

Reports have suggested that over a million people participated in the Women's March from all over the world. This, undoubtedly deserves much appreciation.

That being said, following the successful implementation of the march, and keeping in mind that the issues that the event addressed are ideas that can't be brought about in a transforming manner overnight, the question that arises is this: What next?

Well, we say, it's something that has to be determined by people who so energetically came out in support of this peaceful procession to support the ideas of righteousness and equality.

WATCH | Ellen DeGeneres' Emotional Video Tribute to Barack and Michelle Oabama

Ellen DeGeneres paid a heartwarming tribute to now former President of the United States, Barack Obama in a 5- minute long video she published on YouTube on Obama's last day of holding office.

In the video, Ellen can be seen thanking Mr. Obama for standing up for the LGBT rights when in power, saying, "“I am a happily married woman because of him. And so is my wife!”

During his time in office, Mr. Obama had visited The Ellen Show twice, besides appearing in several live link- ups with the show.

The video also shows Ellen engaged in various hilarious moments with Michelle Obama including the time when Mrs. Obama went shopping with the talk show host and the latter took a megaphone to ask an entire store if they had a cream for the First Lady's rash.

Earlier, Mr. Obama had called Ellen a "role model" for coming out openly as a lesbian in the late '90's. During the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony, the former president also said that Ellen "reminds us that we have more in common than we realise”.

He then continued to say, “It’s easy to forget now, when we’ve come so far, where now marriage is equal under the law, just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago. Just how important it was, not just to the LGBT community, but for all of us to see somebody so full of kindness and light, somebody we liked so much, somebody who could be our neighbor, or our colleague, or our sister, challenge our own assumptions. Remind us that we have more in common than we realize. Push our country in the direction of justice.

“What an incredible burden that was to bear, to risk your career like that.”

Barack Obama ended his term as President of the United States on 20th January, 2017 at 12 PM, Washington D.C time.

TECHNOLOGY | Samsung to Announce Cause of Galaxy Note 7 Fire on January 23

Samsung Electronics said today that it will announce the reason for the overheating and fire issues in its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on Monday, January 23.

The announcement will be live- streamed in Chinese, English and Korean on its websites. Koh Dong-jin, Samsung’s mobile president, will give details of the probe.

The Galaxy Note 7 proved to be a fiasco for the world’s largest smartphone maker. Eventually, Samsung had to recall and discontinue it's distribution after reports of the smartphone overheating and bursting into flames flooded their customer service forums.

Initially, Samsung has revealed that a small error in the manufacturing process for some of the batteries in the phones had been detected.

Earlier, Samsung had even replaced the phones with a new battery but even those phones faced overheating and caught fire. This prompted Samsung to pull the phones away from the market, an action that cost Samsung at least USD 5 billion.

The announcement comes after a South Korean court dismissed yesterday a request by prosecutors to arrest Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong.

Lee, the conglomerate’s heir and de facto head, is under investigation for alleged bribery in connection with an influence-peddling scandal that led to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye.

LITERATURE | Remembering the Mysterious Edgar Allan Poe on His Birthday

“I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.” - Edgar Allan Poe

At two, he lost his mother, an actress abandoned by her husband along with their three children. Orphaned, he was adopted by a family of a tobacco merchant from Richmond, Virginia while his brother Henry went to their grandparents, and sister Rosalie was taken in by another family.

Such was the early childhood of the man whose life and works continue to exist under a thick veil of mystery and macabre to this date. These were the roots of the man hailed as the "Father of the Detective Story"; a tragic beginning of a brief history of the man whose every aspect still continues to baffle the literary world; a sorry prologue that seems to be narrating a pointless existence, but of a man who served the purpose of laying the foundations of the modern detective stories: the man we all know as Edgar Allan Poe.

This day, the 19th of January, marks the 208th birth anniversary of this mystery- shrouded American poet and story- teller. And so, we remember him today. But not as the man who has been called a "a mad, drunken, womanising opium addict". Instead, we look at him on this day as a misunderstood genius who dedicated his life to the provision of significant contributions in the field of literature.

But before we get into what he wrote, it is important to consider the conditions under which Edgar Allan Poe began his literary existence. When he engaged in putting earnest efforts in making a career out of his writing, following his career at the military, his writings were hampered by the lack of an international copyright law: publishers often produced unauthorised copies of British works rather than paying for new work by Americans. Besides, the booming growth in American periodicals was something that did not last well beyond a few issues. Consequently, publishers often refused to pay their writers, or paid them much later than they promised. Throughout his attempts to live as a writer, Poe repeatedly had to resort to humiliating pleas for money and other assistance.

Despite all these hardships, the literary influence of Edgar Allan Poe spans the minds of some of the greatest creators and story- tellers this world has seen. His early detective fiction tales featuring C. Auguste Dupin could be said to have been the foundation for future detectives in literature.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the man who gave us Sherlock Holmes,  once said, "Each [of Poe's detective stories] is a root from which a whole literature has developed.... Where was the detective story until Poe breathed the breath of life into it?"

The Mystery Writers of America have named their awards for excellence in the genre the "Edgars".

In science fiction too, the influence of Poe's works can be found, notably through Jules Verne, who wrote a sequel to Poe's "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". The sequel was titled "An Antarctic Mystery", a.k.a "The Sphinx of the Ice Fields."

Talking of Poe's original prequel, acclaimed science fiction author H. G. Wells commented, "Pym tells what a very intelligent mind could imagine about the south polar region a century ago," thus hinting to the fact that Poe was a man well ahead of his time.

And maybe this could be the reason for the misunderstanding that surrounds him. Though his works stood out as unique pieces of literature, they might have possibly been crucial in shaping an intriguing image of Poe in the public's minds, besides the aspects that rivals openly bestowed upon him following his mysterious death.

But say what one may, Edgar Allan Poe was a man from the future stuck in a world gone past, which clearly misunderstood him and outed him as an anomaly. Besides being a poet and a writer, Poe was also a critique; that too a relentless one, who showed no mercy in forcing notable writers of his time to look back upon their own works. His criticism attacked the works of significant literary figures of the time with a dire ferocity that is still studied and examined to understand his own literary theory.

On October 3, 1849, Joseph W. Walker, a compositor for the Baltimore Sun, could have stayed at home owing to the rain that soaked Baltimore that day. But he did not. It was Election Day, and the Gunner's Hall public house was the hub of polling activity for the 4th Ward Polls. And that is where Walker headed out to. And that is where he stumbled upon a barely conscious man, shabbily dressed, and lying in a gutter. The man was Edgar Allan Poe.

A concerned Walker asked the poet if he had any connection in Baltimore who could probably help him. To which Poe had given the name of the name of Joseph E. Snodgrass, a magazine editor with some medical training. Hastily, Walker had then scribbled a letter addressed to Snodgrass, saying this:

Baltimore City, Oct. 3, 1849
Dear Sir,
There is a gentleman, rather the worse for wear, at Ryan's 4th ward polls, who goes under the cognomen of Edgar A. Poe, and who appears in great distress, & he says he is acquainted with you, he is in need of immediate assistance.
Yours, in haste,
JOS. W. WALKER
To Dr. J.E. Snodgrass.

Four days later, on October 7, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe died at the Washington College Hospital. To this day, there exists no record as to explain how Poe had ended up in the streets of Baltimore dressed in clothes that were not his own when, about a week earlier he had left from Richmond to Philadelphia for an editing business. It was found that he had never made it to Philadelphia. Nor to New York to escort his aunt to Richmond for his impeding wedding. There's another mystery to his demise:  according to his attending physician Dr. John J. Moran, Poe had repeatedly called out for a "Reynolds" on the night before his death.

As for the cause of death, all of Poe's records have been lost. And in this manner, like his works, Poe's death is a mystery, only without an epilogue where a smart detective solves the puzzle and calls it a day.

So, on this day, we open our hearts to the man who, even in death, gave us a baffling tale of suspense and melancholy, and as we do it, we do it with the understanding a genius like him truly deserved.

Happy Birthday, Poe!

RECOLLECTIONS | When Most of Us Missed Dumbledore's Sexual Preferences

"...And then, Charlie didn't have children or marriage," a thoughtful Rowling tells the interviewer, before meeting his eyes with an enigmatic look on her face.

"Is he gay?" the interviewer asks.

"Tsk... Dumbledore's gay," the authoress clarifies, her face impassive, the sheerest hint of a smile playing around the corners of her lips.

She pauses for a couple of seconds before recalling, "I told a reader that once, and I thought she was gonna slap me."

And then turning her head to the paper on the table, she adds, "But I always saw Dumbledore as gay."

WATCH the dialogue here:

Such was the manner of conversation during which J.K. Rowling openly revealed Dumbledore to be gay. The conversation is a part of a 2007 documentary titled "J.K. Rowling: An Year In The Life", first aired in the United Kingdom on channel ITV on 30 December 2007. And to this date, the claim is considered to be the biggest bombshell that the acclaimed creator of the Harry Potter books has dropped upon the franchise's fandom prior to the completion of the fantasy series that spanned seven books and eight films.

Apart from the reactions that followed Rowling's statement regarding Albus Dumbledore, which ranged from indifference to sheer outrage to happy surprise, not to forget the literary outrage that condemned Rowling for disappointing the imagination of devoted readers, who had formed their own full fledged profile of the Hogwarts headmaster, what interests one is how most of us (though, it would bot be an overstatement to say "all of us") missed the subtle hints that Rowling dropped about Dumbledore's sexual orientation through the course of the story she wrote. Or did she?

Well, that is a question that remains unanswered, but coming to the assumed clues that seem to be pointing out Dumbledore's homosexuality, did we really miss the hints? Was the headmaster's peculiar dressing sense meant to be a sign of his homosexuality? With his 'purple cloak and high-heeled boots,' a 'flamboyantly cut suit of plum velvet,' a flowered bonnet at Christmas or his fascination with knitting patterns some sort of signals that went unheeded by even the most die- hard Potterheads?

Moreover, did the detailed account of Dumbledore's relationship with Grindelwald bear instances from the lives of the two men that seemed to be directed towards Dumbledore's sexual preferences? The headmaster does say this about Gellert Grindelwald in Deathly Hallows, Chapter 35:

“Grindelwald. You cannot imagine how his ideas caught me, Harry, inflamed me. Muggles forced into subservience. We wizards triumphant. Grindelwald and I, the glorious young leaders of the revolution."
“Oh, I had a few scruples. I assuaged my conscience with empty words. It would all be for the greater good, and any harm done would be repaid a hundredfold in benefits for wizards. Did I know, in my heart of hearts, what Gellert Grindelwald was? I think I did, but I closed my eyes. If the plans we were making came to fruition, all my dreams would come true."

But, does this signify his love for Grindelwald, or is it directed towards his love for the power he so wished to have at that time?

The existence and the meaning of such clues and hints remains a matter of debate. What stands out clear though, is the fact that Rowling, in her books, embedded a myriad of the woes of today's world: whether it was the discrimination between the "pure- bloods" and the "mudbloods", or the non- acceptance of the giants, and the werewolves, or the mistreatment of the house- elves, Rowling, through her works targeted the issues of racism, caste-ism, and slavery, all the while telling her readers to break free of these abstract walls that do more harm than good, and to choose to channel the wonders of love- the power of which a gay headmaster revealed before one of his students- a young, bespectacled wizard boy, who, with his flair for adventure, still lives within most of us in our imperfect muggle world.

Float Around and Grow Plants at the International Space Station With NASA's Gaming App

A screenshot from NASA's gaming app "Space Science Investigations: Plant Growth"

A gaming app named "Space Science Investigations: Plant Growth" , that allows you to virtually float around the International Space Station (ISS), meet the crew and even grow plants using your smartphone has been launched by NASA.

The game, which is available for free installation in Google Play Store and App Store, engages players to complete certain tasks, the first of which requires them to navigate the ISS's micro- gravity, or "zero- g" environment by flying around the space station and doing flips.

Users can then float up to astronaut and ISS crew member Naomi in the "Columbus" European Lab to gather explanations  on the game's leading mission: experimental plant growth.

Slash Gear reported that the gaming app can be helpful to players in gaining an understanding of the issues that micro gravity presents for growing plants, such as how they can be watered without gravity.

For long has  NASA worked on growing plants in a low gravity environment, which is a necessity to serve the purpose of providing food during long duration flights, such as to Mars, as well as in habitation pods on other planets.

ISS researchers have already had some success, such as growing red romaine lettuce and the flower Zinnia.

Darjeeling Schoolgirls to be Awarded National Bravery Award for Busting Human Trafficking Racket

Representational Image

17 year old Shivani Gond and 18 year old Tejasweeta Pradhan will find themselves being honoured with national bravery awards next week by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two schoolgirls from West Bengal's Darjeeling district will receive the honours for helping the police in busting a cross- border human trafficking racket, which ultimately led to the arrest of suspects in the cases of girls missing from both India and Nepal.

Shivani and Tejasweeta have been credited for "showing exemplary courage" when acting as decoys to win the trust of traffickers, leading the police to finally catch them red- handed.

The girls reportedly befriended the traffickers on Facebook in May 2016. They then engaged in telephonic conversations with the traffickers, spending days to win their trust. Eventually, they convinced the traffickers that they were willing to run away from home, following which they ultimately led them to the police.

According to government data, there had been a 52.8 percent increase in the number of minor girls "procured" and a 35.4 percent increase in the number of girls sold in 2015 as compared to the previous year.

Besides, West Bengal happens to be among the top three states for traffickers to indulge in luring young girls from poor families,  offering them promises of good jobs. Instead, they force them into the sex trade or into domestic servitude, campaigners say.

In similar manner, the traffickers also targeted Shivani and Tejasweeta, unaware of the fact that the girls were part of an operation jointly organised by police and non-profit organisation Mankind in Action for Rural Growth.

"When we spoke to them, they very openly told us that we would be required to meet the sexual needs of our guests," Shivani Gond told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

"They asked to see our photographs, to make sure we were pretty girls. I was a little scared but we did everything they asked us to because we had to gain their trust."

Tejasweeta Pradhan's mother, Kamlesh Rai, a school teacher, said, "I was hesitant at first, but then I realised that it was our only shot to get the traffickers."

The first breakthrough had come to the police with the arrest of a woman who had travelled to New Jalpaiguri to pick up the girls. her arrest led the police to a missing girl from Nepal, as well as  to a trafficking gang and a  wanted suspect in New Delhi.

The National Bravery Awards are annually given to around 25 children between the ages of 6 and 18. The recipients, selected from across India, are given a medal, certificate and a cash prize, besides financial assistance to complete their schooling.

While children have won awards for foiling robberies, fighting off armed intruders, rescuing people from drowning, saving lives in a stampede and putting out fires, this happens to be the first time that an award will be given regarding a human trafficking case.

Long has planet Jupiter aroused our fascination with its gigantic size and the iconic Great Red Spot that it bears upon itself. To fuel that very fascination, NASA has released a captivating new view of a crescent Jupiter,  showing the Great Red Spot, along with the planet's 'string of pearls'- a series of storms shaped like white ovals. Below the Great Red Spot can be seen the Oval BA, a reddish long-lived storm.

The picture was rendered by a citizen scientist Roman Tkachenko using data from the JunoCam, an instrument on board NASA’s solar-powered Juno spacecraft.

The image was taken on December 11, 2016, from a distance of about 4,58,800 kilometers, as Juno performed its third close flyby of Jupiter.

The Great Red Spot is a giant, spinning storm in Jupiter's atmosphere. It is like a hurricane on Earth. Only much bigger than our own planet; precisely, twice its size. It has been seen on Jupiter ever since telescopes allowed humans to have a peep into the universe about 400 years ago.

Lionel Messi's Statue Vandalised In Argentina

A tweet from Argentine daily, La Nacion
reporting an act of vandalism on Lionel Messi's statue in Buenos Aires

Arguably the greatest player of all times, Lionel Messi is probably one of the most loved players in Catalonia, Spain. However, in his own country, which is separated from Spain by a distance of over 10, 000 kilometres, the football superstar has lately been subjected to an act of vandalism.

A statue of Lionel Messi has been vandalised in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The bronze statue, which was unveiled in June last year, has been broken in half by vandals who have removed the torso, arms and head from the statue. The sculpture was revealed last year before the public just as Messi had announced his retirement from the Argentine national team- a decision which he later reversed.

The motive for the damage remains unknown as of yet, as city officials say that repairs to the statue are already under way.

The statue, now vandalised, stands on Paseo de la Gloria (Glory Street), which is also occupied  by casts of other famous Argentine sports personalities such as tennis player Gabriela Sabatini and basketball player Manuel Ginobili.

Also, it has come forward that statues in that area have been targeted by vandals or thieves previously too, which could suggest that the act was possibly carried out for personal gain rather than out of hatred for Messi.

The Buenos Aires municipal government also came up with a statement regarding the matter, saying, "The statue of Lionel Messi... was victim of an act of vandalism that left the footballer's sculpture without its top half."

They also added, "The city government is already working on its repair."
