Meryl Streep Slams Donald Trump in Golden Globe Acceptance Speech

Accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award- an honorary award "for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment- Meryl Streep used the time allotted to her for her acceptance speech to come down heavy upon the United States' President elect- Donald Trump.

Taking the stage on the 74th Golden Globe Awards, Streep launched an all- out attack on Donald Trump for mocking and imitating a disabled reporter during his campaign. Calling Trump's mockery as a "performance" that stunned her, she went on to say, “It (the performance) sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective, and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth.

“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.”

Further on, Streep highlighted the diversity of culture and geography that exists in harmony within Hollywood, before she emphasised the privilege of belonging to the society of actors and the press, and how the principled press is needed to "hold power to account, to call to them on the carpet for every outrage."

In the end, Meryl Streep concluded her speech with words, that a friend, the departed Princess Leia, had once told her:
"Take your broken heart, make it into art."
Something all of us need to do for a better world.
